How to measure a Horse's Hoof Boot

With so many horse hoof boots on the market in Australia, it can become overwhelming to know which one to buy. You may be wondering ‘what style of hoof boot will suit my horse?’ ‘What type of hoof boot should I get?’ ‘What size hoof boot will I need?’ 'How do I measure the correct size for a hoof boot in Australia?’ The list of questions goes on and on.

Hoof boots can be used for a variety of reasons including providing comfort for horse's with sensitive soles, adding traction and protection for shod horse's and providing rehabilitation for horse's with hoof injuries or hoof conditions.

When choosing a hoof boot for your horse, be sure to remember that each horse hoof boot brand will fit differently. Your choice will also depend on what you are planning to use the hoof boot for in Australia. There are a few simple steps that need to be followed to ensure you choose the correct size hoof boot, and make sure your horse is as comfortable as possible.

We are going to look at how to correctly measure your horse’s hoof for the Delta Hoof Boot - Made by Cavallo.

1. Firstly, we need to make sure your horse has been freshly trimmed. It is recommended that your horse be trimmed based on  its confirmation and completed by a professional farrier or trimmer.

2. Now that your horse’s hooves have been trimmed, it is time to measure the length of your horse’s hoof.  You must measure the length of the hoof from the toe to the buttress line. Measure every hoof you will be putting a boot on. It is best to measure your horse's hoof in millimetres. This will give you the most accurate measurement. Be sure not to measure the bulb of the horse's hoof, as this will give you a false measurement and you may end up with boots that are too big!

3. Now that you know the length of your horse's hooves, it's time to choose the size! Use the sizing chart below to locate your horse’s hoof boot size.  If your horse has measured between sizes, choose the larger size, as the hoof will grow.

* Please note: if the width of your horse’s hoof is greater than the length, the Delta Hoof Boot may not be suitable.

Hoof Length

Delta Hoof Boot Size

4” (102mm) - 4 ¼" (109mm) 000
4 5/6” (110mm) - 4 9/16” (1117mm) 00
4 5/8” (118mm) - 4 7/8” (125mm) 0
4 15/16” (126mm) - 5 3/16” (133mm) 1
5 ¼" (134mm) - 5 ½" (141mm) 2
5 9/16” (142mm) - 5 13/16” (146mm) 3
5 7/8” (150mm) - 6 1/8” (157mm) 4

Now that you know what size hoof boot your horse requires, how do you fit the Delta Hoof Boot?

4. Once you have your Delta Hoof Boot, open the boot completely.  Lift your horse's hoof and insert it into the boot, toe first. Ensure you position the boot, so that it is properly aligned with the hoof.

5. Once the hoof boot is correctly placed on the hoof, place the booted hoof onto the ground.  Your horse’s heel will slide  straight in!

6. Now the Delta Hoof boot is on your horse's hoof, and the hoof is on the ground, you can check to make sure it fits correctly.  You can see inside the boot to ensure the foot is sitting straight and not bulging into the sides or has too much room to move.

 * Please note: If your hoof boot is too big or too small, this will cause the boot to move and twist, creating pressure points, sores and may even cause the boot to come off while in use.

7. Once you are confident your Delta Hoof Boot is the right size, and is fitting correctly, it is time to secure the boot. Push the front flaps firmly against the hoof, securing the Velcro evenly against each other. Next, slide the safety strap through the buckle on the front of the boot, and fasten the Velcro. Finally, secure the second Velcro safety strap, to prevent the first coming undone.

Now that you have your Delta Hoof Boots secure on your horse's hooves, you may want to add some EXTRA comfort.

The Delta Pastern Wraps are designed to fit snugly around your horse’s pastern, to add an extra layer of protection and prevent any rubbing.

How do I fit a Delta Pastern Wrap

1. Firstly, open your Delta Pastern Wrap and place it around your horse’s hoof. You will see the shape fits easily around the bulb of your horse's hoof. Place it low to the ground, around the bottom of your horse’s bulb and draw the elastic tabs diagonally upward, from back to front, and secure the Velcro.

2. Once the Delta Pastern Wrap is secured, place the Delta Hoof Boot on the hoof, toe-first. Now you can secure the RED Velcro tab from the Pastern Wrap onto the front Velcro tongue of the Hoof boot, ensuring the Pastern Wrap does not move.

3. Now, you can continue to fasten the Velcro tabs on your Delta Hoof Boot
